Born: 26 August 1860  Coleraine, Londonerry, Northern Ireland.  Died: 31 March 1944  South Yarra, Victoria, Australia.
(Sir) Thomas Ranken Lyle was Professor of Natural Philosophy, University of Melbourne 1889-1914, chairman of the Board of the Melbourne Observatory 1903-44, a scientific advisor to the Naval Board 1914-18, and president of the Australian National Research Council 1929-32.
