| Thomas Cherry was appointed the first Professor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne 1911-16 and was later the John Grice Research Fellow in cancer at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and at the Veterinary Research Institute, Melbourne 1921-34. |

Educated University of Melbourne (MB 1889, MD 1892, MS 1894), Kings's College, London and University of Aberdeen (pathology and bacteriology). Worked in his father's joinery workshop 1877-84; senior house surgeon, Melbourne Hospital 1890; overseas study 1891; assistant lecturer and demonstrator in pathology, University of Melbourne 1892-93; bacteriological work in Europe 1894; bacteriological service to doctors and hospitals, Melbourne 1895-99; lecturer in bacteriology, University of Melbourne 1900-05; acting registrar of the university 1901-02; director of agriculture 1905-10; professor of agriculture, University of Melbourne 1911-16; Australian Army Medical Corps 1916-18; John Grice Cancer Research Fellow, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research 1921-29, John Grice Cancer Research Fellow, Veterinary Research Institute, University of Melbourne 1930-34; Cancer Causation Research Committee from 1934.
