Born: 24 April 1913  Berlin-Friedenau, Germany.  Died: 18 June 1975  Doncaster, Victoria, Australia.
Gerard Werner Benkendorff was head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He was one of the pioneers in the development of degree courses in the Victoria Institute of Colleges system.

1932 - 1938Attended universities taking such subjects as bacteriology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, metallurgy, mineralogy and pharmaceutical chemistry, in Würzburg, Göttigen and Frankfurt, Germany
1938Diploma Chemistry Degree with thesis 'Preparation of anhydrous praseodymium' completed at the University of Frankfurt, Germany
1939Married Jutta Metschke at Berlin-Zehlendorff in Germany
1941Granted a Doctor of Natural Science (PhD) for thesis concerning fillers in plastics from the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physical Chemistry and Electro-Chemistry at Berlin-Dahlem, Germany
1941 - 1943Worked in research and pilot plant design at Ruhrchemie AG in Oberhausen-Holten, Germany
1944 - 1945Worked in development, production and administration at Dynamit AG in Kaufbeuren, Germany
1951 - 1952Family decided to migrate to Australia, arriving in Sydney on the 'Strathnaver' in early February 1952
