Kottmann, Gustav

Online Sources
Sugar pioneer
Gustav Kottmann was a German beet sugar chemist employed by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company in 1883. He undertook field experimental work on soil analysis, green manuring and artificial fertilisers, running trials on a few clumps of cane in nurseries. Between 1885 and 1888 he devised a formula to assess from the weight and analysis of the cane the amount of sugar a mill should obtain from it. This formula was known as P.O.C.S. (Pure Obtainable Cane Sugar). By 1890 he was the inspecting chemist.
