Born: 4 November 1933  Griffith, New South Wales, Australia
Ian Gordon McWilliam developed a flame ionisation detector in 1957; this was a new gas chromatography tool capable of measuring components of organic chemicals present in one part in 10 million.

Educated University of Melbourne (BSc (Hons) 1952), and Monash University (DSc 1974); Head, Physical Methods Section (later Instrument Development Section), ICI Central Research Laboratories 1956-68; Shell Research Fellow, Monash University 1968-70; Principal Lecturer, then Associate Professor in chemistry, Swinburne University of Technology. Grimwade Prize 1962; Rennie Memorial Medal 1961; K.L. Sutherland Memorial Medal 1992. Chairman, Australian Scientific Industry Association, Victoria 1983-86.
