Further description:
With its Central Office in Canberra dealing with all administration and the Annual Congress, there are Divisions in most States; these act fairly independently and organise their own lectures, visits, etc, but co-operate fully for the Congress. Since the growth of discipline-specific organisations, the Congress considers major problems from different aspects so as to present a broad view to a wide audience. A feature of each Congress is Youth ANZAAS, which brings together 15–17 year olds, expanding their scientific horizons through workshops, shows and competitions. Intermixing between the young persons and the main Congress is encouraged, and this helps inspire those not yet committed. Funds come from four sources: memberships, sponsorships, donations, and some Government flinding towards the Congress. Our journal, SEARCH, is published ten times per year, and has a distribution of over 3000.

Further description:
Over its long history the BA Annual Meeting has changed from being the scientific centrepiece of the year at which major developments would be announced, to more of a festival of science at which many advances are demonstrated. Recently, some 350 presentations were given with many hands-on activities for the 6,000 youth delegates, aged from 8 to 13 years, who attended; this requires an immense amount of work as activities must be curriculum-related. A more recent innovation has been the National Science Week, organised by the BA but with other organisations running the many separate activities. Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) are featured and the 3,000 events drew an audience of one to two million with about sixty million watching the BBC TV Special. This venture is seen as most worthwhile since it brings science to the people and creates widespread media interest.

With only 7% of the world's arable land and 23% of its population, there is great emphasis on providing help to farmers and encouraging them towards better practice. To discourage urbanisation of the population, teaching of science is taken to country districts. As a result, CAST has 165 regional or community organisations, all of which aim to popularise science in their own way, except that their aims are given central approval and performance is assessed. CAST emphasises youth training — learn science, love science — and aims to help society in general cope with the stresses which occur as the economy changes.

Further description:

Introduction
Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city. It is recognized that Hong Kong's success as a modern and commercially prosperous place is partly due to the significant contributions made by people in the fields of science and technology in the past. Although there are many institutions and associations, industrialists, academics and professionals involved in the development of science and technology, it is considered that their activities are mostly in a "vertical" direction and cannot develop an "horizontal integration" among the contributory elements in the development of science and technology. However, there is rarely a manufactured product requiring scientific and technological inputs relates to just one profession or one field of knowledge. The Hong Kong Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology, with its highly integrative and multi-faceted nature, will promote "horizontal" communication and cooperation amongst the members of these institutions, associations and industry. This, together with the "vertical" nature of various other institutions and associations which are already in existence, will enable the functions and activities in various fields to be undertaken within a close network of inter-professionalism with enhanced cooperation and coordination amongst the individuals involved. This will be an invaluable contribution towards the prosperity of Hong Kong.

Establishment history
With the above concept in mind, a promoters' meeting was held on the 25th March 1985 for the establishment of the Association.

On the 19th June 1985 the Association was founded. Prof. Chan Yau-Wa was elected the founding President. The Association has now over 200 members, all of whom are professionals, academics and industrialists from different disciplines with good standing.

Aims and objectives
The aims and objectives of the Association are:—

Functions
Based on the above the Association will:—
