Born: 4 January 1895  Deventer, Netherlands.  Died: 6 January 1963  Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia.
Laurens Gerhard M. Baas- Becking was Professor of Botany, Leiden University, Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Buitenzorg, Java and then a member of the Botany Department, University of Sydney 1951-52. He also worked for the Bureau of Mineral Resources and the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation).
