Romilly, Hugh Hastings (1856 - 1892)

Born: 15 March 1856 London, England. Died: 27 July 1892 London, England.

Hugh Hastings Romilly was administrator of New Guinea 1884-85 and for 3 months in 1886 and deputy administrator July 1887-September 1888. He wrote "A True Story of the Western Pacific" (1882), "The Western Pacific and New Guinea" (1886) and "From My Verandah in New Guinea" (1889) and his "Letters from the Western Pacific and Mashonaland" were published by his brother Samuel in 1893. Romilly was a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG).

1888 - 1890 British Consul in New Hebrides (fourteen months)
1890 Returned to England and resigned from the Colonial Office to lead a prospecting expedition to Mashonaland, Africa.
