Daneš, Jirí Václav (1880 - 1928)

Born: 23 August 1880  Nový Dvur, Czechoslovakia.  Died: 11 April 1928  Los Angeles, United States of America.
Jirí Václav Daneš first came to Australia in 1909 as part of a fifteen month geographical survey. During this trip he explored areas in Queensland (including Cairns and the Barkly tableland), Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia (including Yallingup and Kalgoorlie). When back in Czechoslovakia Daneš worked at the Charles Ferdinand University and eventually was made Dean of the science faculty. He also travelled widely in Europe and America producing many publications, many on karst topography. Jirí Václav Daneš returned to Australia in 1920 as the Consul-general for Czechoslovakia. Three years later he was back in Prague and at the Charles Ferdinand University. In December 1927 he began a long lecture tour of America, but just over four months later he was killed in a car accident. Daneš was a corresponding member of the Royal Society of Queensland and a member of the Czechoslovak Academy of Science.
