| Born September 1796, Banbridge, Co. Down, Ireland. Navy captain. Went to the Cape of Good Hope as mate of the "Doterel" sloop, 1818; accompanied Captain Parry in Arctic voyages, 1821-7; lieutenant, 1826; served off Portugal, 1831-5; first lieutenant and second-in-command under James Ross of the "Cove" 1836; went with Ross to explore Antarctic Ocean, 1839; discovered north-west passage in company with Sir John Franklin (record found, 1859); lost in Arctic regions, 1848. |
