Geoffrey Ivan Opat was Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Melbourne 1973-2002 and published widely in the fields of nuclear physics and particle physics.

General Motors Research Fellow, University of Melbourne 1959-61; Fullbright Research Associate, University of Pennsylvania 1961-64; Senior Lecturer in Physics, University of Melbourne 1964-73; Professor of Experimental Physics 1973-2002. Boas Medal for Physics Research 1990; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1994; R&D Award 1996.
