Automotive engineer
Lewis Thornett Bandt, a long standing employee of the Ford Motor Company, was the first person to design the "ute". The utility was designed in 1933 while he was working at Ford’s Geelong plant. Sadly he was killed in a road accident while driving his fully restored 1933 coupe utility to the filming of a documentary about the development of the utility.
