Hanks, Ernest Silverton (1892 - 1973)

Born: 5 April 1892  Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.  Died: 12 April 1973.
Ernest Silverton Hanks was a long serving committee member for the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union, the Bird Observers' Club and the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria. Worked hard for conservation and the preservation of our natural resources.

Career Highlights
Born Melbourne, 5 April 1892. Died Melbourne, 12 April 1973. Worked in the family foundry, where he demonstrated that solid metal will float in its own melt. Council member, Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union 1930-68, president 1957-58 and RAOU representative on the You Yangs Park Committee; committee member, Bird Observers' Club for over 30 years, president 1939-40, Honorary Life Member 1970; Life Member, Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria 1925; Life Member, Anthropological Society of Victoria; member, Management Committee, Wyperfeld National Park.

His wife, Pearl, was, like her husband, a life member of the Field Naturalists' Club of Victoria from 1925, a life member of the Anthropological Society of Victoria and a member of the Henry Lawson Society, the Poetry Lovers, the Australian Literature Society, the Bird Observers' Club (of which she was also sometime president) and the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union. They both had poems and stories published.
