Walter Neville (Neville) Hurst's career can be divided into four segments: 1955-72: Research with DSTO (Defence Science and Technology Organisation); 1973-87: Science and environment policy; 1987-96: Senior administration; 1996-: post-Australian Public Service work. He studied mathematics at the University of Melbourne (BA Hons, MA Hons).
