Ian Hugh Sloan has been with the School of Mathematics at the University of New South Wales since 1965 and is currently Scientia Professor. His research is in the area of mathematical analysis of approximate methods.

Born Melbourne, 17 June 1938. Educated Universities of Melbourne (BSc 1958, BA (hons) 1960), Adelaide (MSc 1961) and London (PhD 1964). Research Scientist, CSR Co., Sydney 1964-65; Lecturer in Mathematics, University of New South Wales 1965-68, Senior Lecturer 1968-73, Associate Professor 1973-85, Professor (personal chair) 1985-99, Scientia Professor 1999- , Director, NSW Centre for Parallel Computing 1992- . Fulbright Award 1978; Fellow, Australian Institute of Physics; Fellow, Australian Academy of Science 1993; ANZIAM Medal, Australian Mathematical Society 1997. Editor SIAM Journal of Numerical Analysis 1993- ; President, Australian Mathematical Society 1998-2000.
