Gavan John McCarthy, as the inaugural member of staff, was appointed in 1985 to establish the Australian Science Archives Project in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Melbourne. ASAP, as it was known, became part of the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre when it was established in 1999. McCarthy was archivist in charge of ASAP until his appointment as Director of the Centre. He is known internationally for his innovative approach to archival description and contextual information management.

Chronology
1978 - 1985Archivist (mostly part-time) at the University of Melbourne Archives. Worked on the records of The Zinc Corporation Ltd; Conzinc Rio-Tinto Australia Ltd and began investigations into the use of computerised databases for archives.
1978 - 1986Periodic performances with Live Improvised Music Events (LIME) and experimental percussion group specialising in home-made instruments and found objects.
1981Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA (Hons)) completed at La Trobe University
1981 - 1982Tutor in first year improvisation in the Department of Music at La Trobe University
1983 - 1985Casual professional music engagements as a double bass player with a variety of groups and orchestras including the Victorian State Opera and the Melbourne Musicians.
1985 - Professional member of the Australian Society of Archivists Inc.
1985 - 1999Director (formerly Archivist-in-charge) of the Australian Science Archives Project at the University of Melbourne
1987 - Convenor of the Science, Technology and Medicine Archives Special Interest Group of the Australian Society of Archivists Inc.
