Ian James Gawler worked in private veterinary practices in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland 1972-1985. A former cancer patient himself, Gawler has written widely on self-help techniques for cancer patients and their families. He was appointed executive director of the Gawler Foundation (previously the Australian Cancer Patients' Foundation) in 1983.
