Chang, Victor (1936 - 1991)

Born: 1936  Shanghai, China.  Died: 4 July 1991  Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Victor Chang was one of the world’s leading cardiac surgeons and is best known for his outstanding work in heart transplantation. Chang spent most of his career at St Vincent’s hospital in Sydney and travelled widely across Asia to train local surgeons in cardiac surgery procedures. Victor Chang was murdered during a suspected burglary in 1991, but his legacy lives on at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute which was established in 1994.

1962Bachelor of Medicine (MB) and Bachelor of Surgery (BS) completed at the University of Sydney
1963 - 1967Intern then Registrar in cardiothoracic surgery at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney
c. 1968 - Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS)
c. 1968 - c. 1972Trained in Britain with a Fellowship in Surgery from the English and American College of Surgeons
1972 - Returned to St Vincent's Hospital joining the cardiothoracic team
1982 - Member of the Australia China Council
1984Pioneered the National Heart Transplant Program, St Vincent's Hospital
1986Companion of the Order of Australia (AC)
