1891 - 1962

Eric Oswald Hercus was educated in New Zealand, and at Cambridge in the UK. In 1919, he became a Lecturer in Natural Philosophy (i.e. Physics) at the University of Melbourne. Hercus was involved in the Optical Munitions Panel right from the start, and he became the leader of the optical systems design team.

Hercus wrote Elements of Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics, published in 1951. He retired as an Associate Professor in 1956, but continued to hold a position at CSIRAC (in the University of Melbourne Department of Physics) until his death in 1962.
