Born St. Fagans, Glamorgan, Wales, 28 January 1858; died Sydney 28 August 1934. Education Oxford University (B.A. 1881) and Royal College of Science, London (1882). Assistant, N.S.W. geological survey, 1882-91. Professor of geology, Sydney University 1891-1924. F.R.S. 1900. K.B.E. 1920.
