Instructions for Galileo List

The HPS Department here at Melbourne runs a computer 'LIST', (called "GALILEO") to which you are all invited to subscribe.

By a 'COMPUTER LIST' I mean here a special email address which is both:

• a common-or-garden list of email addresses, and
• is setup on a computer in a special manner, so that any message sent to the LIST address is automatically forwarded on to every email address on the list kept by the LIST.(1)

TO SUBSCRIBE to this LIST (i.e. to get your email address added to the list kept by the LIST) you do not send a message to the LIST address (or else your message will obviously be forwarded on to all the email addresses on the LIST, and you hence will be deemed a public nuisance.) Instead you email a simple message, viz: SUBSCRIBE GALILEO to the email address: MAILSERV@UNIMELB.EDU.AU. (Conversely, to get off the list of names maintained by the LIST, i.e. to stop having messages forwarded to you, you send a message UNSUBSCRIBE GALILEO to the same address. You are welcome to do this quite frequently, i.e to suit your personal movements. It is no bother to anyone if you add and subtract your name frequently. (But if you are going to do it a lot it would be a good idea to add the requisite address to your electronic address-book (etc.) - available according to the capabilities of the email program you are using.)

TO SEND a message to the LIST for forwarding to all the email addresses in the list kept by the LIST, you simply send the message to GALILEO@UNIMELB.EDU.AU. If you are likely to be using the service, it is a good idea to store this in your electronic address-book.

To REPLY to a message received from the list, you have to decide if you wish your reply to go to:

• the person who sent to GALILEO the message you are replying to, or
• everyone on the list GALILEO.

The second option is quite commonly used when there is a debate taking place on the LIST.

To actuate the former of these options, just use the normal REPLY/ANSWER facility provided by your email programme.

To actuate the second option, you will need to address your message explicitly to GALILEO. (This operation is different to that on some other LISTs, as the person who controls the list has to decide which way the list is set up. Some LISTs direct the REPLY TO option to the LIST rather than to the original forwarder: I have decided not to do that in our case, as it can become a nuisance.)

For a list of the addresses which subscribe to galileo, subscribers only can send the message SEND/LIST GALILEO to MAILSERV@UNIMELB.EDU.AU.

To get a list of further commands you can use, send the message HELP to MAILSERV@UNIMELB.EDU.AU.

(1) Sorry about the clumsy language here, but it is important to distinguish two items (the computer address = the LIST; and the list of addresses maintained by the LIST) if you are to understand what is going on.
