Fellowships and Grants

Visiting Scholarships at the Unit for the History and Philosophy of Science, University of Sydney, Australia

Particularly suitable for those taking sabbatical leave and 'postdocs', these Scholarships provide visitors with office space and facilities, full access to the University Library (5 million volumes), and assistance with accommodation, travel, etc. The University of Sydney offers a very lively intellectual community, while the city boasts outstanding research and cultural facilities. Visiting Scholars will be invited to offer a course to senior-year/graduate students (one 2-hour seminar weekly). Teaching semesters in 1995/1996 are 27/26 February to 12/10 June, and 24/22 July to 6/4 November. Appointment dates are flexible and arranged by mutual convenience; the stipend is approximately $3000 per semester, or equivalent. Grants for Travel and Research at the Rockefeller Archive Center

The Rockefeller Archive Center, a division of The Rockefeller University, invites applications for its program of Grants for Travel and Research at the Rockefeller Archive Center for 1995. The competitive program makes grants of up to $1,500 to US and Canadian researchers and up to $2,000 to researchers from abroad in any discipline, usually graduate students or post-doctoral scholars, who are engaged in research that requires use of the collections at the Center. These include the records of the Rockefeller family, the Rockefeller Foundation, The Rockefeller University, and other philanthropic organisations and associated individuals. The deadline for applications is December 31, 1994; grant recipients will be announced in March, 1995. Inquiries about the program and requests for applications should be addressed to: Darwin H. Jacobsen Fellowships in Philosophy

Applications are invited for up to two Jacobsen Fellowships in Philosophy tenable at the University of London from 1 October 1995 for a maximum period of two years. The Fellowship has been established from a gift by Mr J.A.B.Jacobsen, and is offered for research in philosophy in the general field of `The Personal and Impersonal Character of Life in the Universe and the Human Person'. The research topics of former Fellows have been as follows: Philosophical Issues in Psychology and Psychiatry, The Concept of Non-existents, Consciousness and the Self, Theories of Tradition Interpretation and Authority in Classical India, Anti-realism in the Philosophy of Mathematics.

Candidates must hold a doctorate or be close to completing their doctoral thesis.

The stipend of the Fellowship will be related to the Lecturer Scale and will depend on the age and qualifications of the Fellow and the stage reached in his/her career.

London Visiting Fellows Programme

The Centre for the Philosophy of the Natural and Social Sciences (CPNSS) at the London School of Economics has places available for Centre Fellows. Fellowships are open to all fields, for periods from 1 to 12 months. The places are designated for researchers who want to develop contacts with scholars in the LSE and other London institutions.

The Fellowships provide attractive research space and standard departmental facilities at the Centre, which is located next to the British Library of Political and Economic Science. They do not cover either travel or living expenses.
