[News logo] Scientific Senators?

Below is a call for contributors to the Biographical Dictionary of the Australian Senate. The compilers are interested to hear of any Senators who may have had a scientific bent, or who were active supporters of Australian science through the Committee system or in Parliament itself. Any suggestions?

Call for Contributors

The Department of the Senate is commemorating federation by producing a Biographical Dictionary of the Australian Senate. The first volume will cover the period 1901 - c.1970 and the second, 1970-2001.

The major focus of each entry will be upon an individual's parliamentary and political life. Entries will range in length from 750 to 3500 words and will include a photograph and an abbreviated parliamentary chronology. The Biographical Dictionary of the Australian Senate will make a scholarly contribution to parliamentary as well as historical knowledge.

We invite historians, biographers and those with an interest in political, social and constitutional history to contact the Research Section in the Department of the Senate if they wish to contribute to what will be a work of some significance.

Anticipated publication date for Volume One is 1996.

Contact the Director of Research, Research Section, Procedure Office, Department of the Senate, Parliament House, Canberra ACT 2600. For details phone Sue Rickard, Project Manager, on (06) 277 3189, or fax (06) 277 5838.
