Health and Medicine Museums SIG (New South Wales branch) presents

COMING TO GRIPS WITH CATALOGUING

a workshop for custodians of health and medicine collections

Sunday 29 June 1997 10. 00 am - 4.00 pm
Powerhouse Museum Harris Street Ultimo (Sydney) NSW
Cost will include a light lunch.Booking essential

The workshop will suitable for all custodians of health and medical collections, whether they are cataloguing their collections by hand or by computer. Mr Des Beechey, Senior Registrar at the Powerhouse Museum, has kindly agreed to lead the workshop, and we expect that there will be plenty of time for discussion by workshop participants.

Topics will include:

  • What is the minimum number of fields that a catalogue entry should have?

  • Should Australian health and medicine collections try to standardise their records to facilitate exchange of information?

  • What is AMOL (Australian Museums On Line) and does it (or should it) affect how we do our own cataloguing?

  • Should HMM be involved in developing a thesaurus or standardised list of terms to be used in health and medicine catalogues?

The NSW committee of HMM is very interested in hearing from HMM members around Australia who cannot attend this workshop, but have comments to make e.g. How many fields do you use in your records? Have you developed a thesaurus, or do you know of a useful one that has been published?
