150 years of anaesthesia in Launceston
A number of activities have been arranged for Saturday 7 June
to commemorate Dr William Ross Pugh's first anaesthetic, administered
in June 1847 in Launceston. The Royal Australian College of Anaesthetists
and the Royal Australian College of Surgeons have joined together
to arrange a most interesting day for their Fellows, members of
Launceston Historical Society and interested members of the public.
Their Scientific meeting will follow on Sunday 8 June.

In sickness and health: tour of Rookwood
Rookwood Necropolis,
established in 1867 in the western suburbs of Sydney, is one of
the largest cemeteries in the world. The Friends of Rookwood are
a volunteer group who hold tours regularly. One tour that is of
particular interest to HMM members is In Sickness and Health,
next taking place on 3 August. Focusing on some terrible epidemics
of the last hundred years, tour guides will discuss diseases,
treatments and the patients and practitioners who are buried at
Rookwood.

The life and times of William Redfern
A one-day event in Campbelltown organised by HMM (NSW), the NSW
Society of the History of Medicine, and Campbelltown and Airds
Historical Society. The day will commence with a seminar at the
University of Western Sydney where several speakers will give
presentations on Surgeon William Redfern and his colonial contemporaries.
Lunch at the university will be followed by a bus tour of the
historic Campbelltown district, including visits to sites associated
with Redfern and with the NSW Benevolent Society, founded by Redfern's
contemporary William Bland.
