Burfitt, Walter Charles Fitzmaurice (1874 - 1956)

Born: 16 February 1874  Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia.  Died: 1 June 1956  Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Walter Charles F. Burfitt was a consultant surgeon at Macquarie Street, Sydney 1912-40 and was known for his deft and extremely rapid operations. In 1927 he donated money to the Royal Society of New South Wales for the Walter Burfitt Prize and Medal for published research.

Born Dubbo, New South Wales, 16 February 1874. Died Sydney, 1 June 1956. Educated University of Sydney (BA 1894, BSc 1898, MB, ChM 1900). Resident medical officer, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital 1900; general practice, Glebe 1901-12; consultant surgeon, Macquarie Street 1912-40; surgeon and later gynaecologist, Lewisham Hospital 1901-40; medical officer, St Vincent's Hospital from 1901 and at the diphtheria clinic of the Royal Alexandra Hospital for children and visiting surgeon, Parramatta District and Western Suburbs hospitals; retired 1944. Founding member, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons 1928; founder and sometime president, Medical Benevolent Association of New South Wales; founder and sometime chairman, Hospital Almoners' Guild. Commemorated by Walter Burfitt Prize, Royal Society of New South Wales and Walter Burfitt Scholarship in physics or chemistry, University of Sydney.
