| Richard James A. Berry was professor of anatomy at the University of Melbourne 1905-29. He wrote several books, including "Practical Anatomy" in 1914, which remained the text for Melbourne students for 25 years. |

| Born Upholland, Lancashire, England, 30 May 1867. Died Bristol, 30 September 1962. Educated at Edinburgh (MB, ChM 1891, MD 1894). FRCS (Edinburgh). MD, (ad. eund.), University of Melbourne 1906. Apprenticed to a firm of shipbrokers in Liverpool for several years; house-surgeon, Royal Infirmary 1891-95; lecturer in anatomy, school of medicine, Royal Colleges 1896-1905; professor of anatomy, University of Melbourne, 1906-29; consulting psychiatrist to the Melbourne and children's hospitals; director of medical services, Stoke Park Colony, Bristol, England 1929-40. Designed a new building for the department of anatomy, opened in 1923 and known as 'Berry's Folly' because of its size. |
