Michael Newton Barber is Executive Director of Science Planning at CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and a past Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of the University of Western Australia. Before his move to science administration, Barber was an accomplished physicist and mathematician who lectured and researched at the Australian National University, the University of New South Wales and at the Universities of Washington and California in the USA. His present research interests include statistical mechanics, material science and computational mathematics.
